INTEGRATOR OF NEW AND USED ROBOTS FOR INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION

Spot Welding Robots

Spot Welding Robots: Spot welding, a type of resistance welding, is the most common welding application found in the manufacturing field. It joins thin metals together when the metals resist the electrical current.

While it is commonly used in the automotive industry to join sheet metal frames together, the spot welding application has a variety of project uses.Spot welding robots have the ability to overcome difficult welds while providing consistant quality.

Automating spot welding is quick, easy and a great economic solution. A spot welding robot is cost effective and comes in several models like the FANUC R-2000iA and the Motoman ES165N.  These robots offer various kinds offer floor space savings, which is why so many automative manufacturing companies have incorporated to this kind of robot into their plant.

Project Summaries

UP165 Industrial Robot

An automotive parts manufacturer needed an industrial robot to perform precise spot welding tasks. RobotWorx helped this customer find the right robotic solution for their application.

Application Goals:

  • Versatility: The customer produces several automotive parts that need to be spot welded. In order to save money and floor space, they required a robot that can be programmed to spot weld four different parts.
  • Affordability: A reconditioned Motoman ES165 robot saved the customer between 40-60% over the price of a new robot. The reconditioned ES165 performs to the same standards and even looks brand new.
  • Throughput: The customer required that parts be produced quickly and efficiently. When combined with the efficiency of a workcell, the ES165 and spot welding gun produce fast, quality welds in a short time.

RobotWorx Solution:

  •  Versatile Robot: A reconditioned Motoman ES165 spot welding robot with XRC controls and teach pendant provided the customer the flexability needed to spot welded numerous parts.
  • Custom Workcell: The custom-built workcell contained two steel tables that are 20" high with 48" X 24" table tops for increased throughput and the ability to load different parts simultaneously.
  • End of Arm Tooling: A new Obara SRTX-U0662-L Servo transgun package was installed to precisely spot weld the part. This spot welding package included the mount bracket to the ES165 wrist and dress out package with chiller.
  • ES165 WorkcellSpot Weld Controller: A new Medar WTC 3006 AC Weld Controller powered the end of arm spot welding gun with a 250 amp 2 pole circuit, 250 VA control transformer, and 1200 amp water cooled SCR.  The unit is designed specifically for the Motoman XRC controller installed on this robot.
  • Operator Station: Controlling and attached to the workcell was an Allen-Bradley SLC series PLC with PanelView operator station.
  • Safety Package: This workcell included safety fencing for the perimeter of the cell, one entry door with interlock, robotic zone ring, and two sets of light curtains for operator protection.
  • Service: All workcells from RobotWorx come with free training at the Marion, Ohio facility and a one year warranty that covers parts and labor 100%. The customer also elected to have a RobotWorx engineer come to their facility for additional training and workcell installation.

The customer chose RobotWorx for their industrial robot needs because they needed an integrator that could perform everything they needed, including programming, system runoff, delivery, etc. RobotWorx strives to meet the needs of every customer.
