Teenage boy creates multifunctional robot

Pham Ngoc Thang’s repertoire of inventions includes a vacuuming robot, an electric massager and software to help students with their homework. Thang’s passion for robots was sparked when he was 12 and saw a robocon competition on TV. In January 2006, he started creating the robot with materials he scrounged up from children’s toys: a plastic box, a set of wheels with swivelling plates, a sound transmitter and light bulbs.

Robots slash pressure vessel welding time

At the Eynsham factory of Oxford Magnet Technology, 750 liquid helium-filled vessels are produced each year for housing the superconducting magnet that forms the heart of magnetic resonance imaging systems for body and brain scanners. It takes an experienced operator 14 hours to weld each stainless steel vessel by hand, but following the installation this summer (2001) of a turnkey robotic welding cell configured by Bauromat, the cycle has been reduced to just two hours.
