Many companies believe outsourcing is solution saving money. Though other countries offer the advantage of lower wages, companies should focus more on automation which would allow production to stay in the United States. Robots are the cheapest employees and improve production and quality.  Ignorance of the costs of logistics, the supply chain and manufacturing can sink a company--and even a nation.

Automation has decreased the amount of workers required in a process. Many companies are adapting new production processes in order to keep away from outsourcing. In order to improve efficiency, these new process must be combined with inventive products. Manufacturing—the transformation of materials into products—has not been a primary source of prosperity in the United States or almost any other advanced economy for the last two generations.

Proper assembly systems can improve productivity. Volume greatly affects the versatility of the system. It is important the item being made is created with the operations in mind. Integrated welding and assembly systems are by nature complex engineering projects.

One way to optimize a process is to apply the theories of constraints. The use of this idea requires finding the slowest part of production and decreasing the other steps to this same speed. When applied the theory has the capability to boost production. Merely staying busy is not a determinant of success. The most popular book among steel fabricators—other than the Manual of Steel Construction—is probably The Goal by Dr. Eli Goldratt.

There are many processes that do not fit the need of total automation. Partial automation allows these companies to observe the benefits of automation without wasting money. The process consists of two phases. Semi-automation is a cost-effective alternative.

Robots have and will continue to be incorporated into many areas of production. The rise in robotics is due to the advancements being made, as well as, the drop in price. Robots are becoming easier to use and capable of being integrated into all sizes of production. When the current recession ends, technical advances and lower costs will encourage the wider use of robots by industry.

Agile prodcution began as a business concept but has turned into a new form of manufacturing that may change the production world in the future.  Lean manufacturing once dominated production lines but it now has a new oppnent that is challenging traditional manufacturing once characterized by high order quantities, capacity, and inventory.

Robots have continued to advance while prices have decreased. Pick-and-Place robots are more versatile with improvements such as, vision technology. Advancements are also being made in controllers allowing for manufacturers including, Adept and ABB, to produce better models.

Robots manufacturers continue to develop new products that are flexible and are decreasing in costs. These improvements such as, vision technology, allow for robots to be used in many applications. Robot manufacturer, KUKA, has developed new models, KR180 PA and KR 40 PA. Robotic equipment has followed the same path as many other technological innovations Robots can now be commonly found at several points on the packaging line.

The need to remove the idea that robots are a commodity cause Motoman to develop new models of robots. The company decided to keep the cost the same but offer a better product that was developed based on a complete manipulator. The result was the EA and ES series that brought on benefits such as, decreased costs and downtime, better repair and precise programming. "They're just commodities now.
