Work Cell Door Safety Features

Oct 21, 2014

When integrating a welding work cell onto your production floor, it is very important to take all the necessary safety precautions. Installing safety elements onto a workcell ensures that humans do not get injured during the operation. There are two different type of safety work cell doors, the window-door and the door interlock system.

Welding work cells can be very dangerous if the proper safety precautions are not taken. That is why a safety package for a work cell is so important. There are many safety features that keep human workers from getting injured while the work cell robots are operating. Most work cells have at least two different doors available: Window-Door and Door Interlock Systems.

In the window workcell door, an entry door is opened and a part is placed in the window onto the positioner. Once the door is closed, the robot knows that it is safe to perform the application needed. The operator and robot never come into close contact.

The safety interlocking system on the workcell operation door will not allow the robot to function at that station unless the door is closed. If the door is opened while the robot is operating, the work cell safety feature will cause the robot to come to a complete stop, and the safety reset button will light up on the operator station. Until that door is closed, the robot will not move automatically. This is also the case for the entry door. The only time that a robot will move when the safety interlocking doors are not closed is when the human operator has the robot in teach mode, and the robot is running through a teach pendant, instead of the operator station.
