Extending the Life of Your Robot with Proper Maintenance

Auto­mat­ed robot­ic sys­tems have been work­ing in fac­to­ries for more than 40 years. Many of them are able to last decades doing the same job, as long as they have prop­er robot­ic main­te­nance peri­od­i­cal­ly. By per­form­ing this main­te­nance to a robot, man­u­fac­tur­ers will extend the life of the robot well beyond what any­one would have imagined.

A good robot can last decades with the right main­te­nance. How­ev­er, with the wrong main­te­nance, it can cause inter­rup­tions and pro­duc­tion shut­downs reg­u­lar­ly. A robot has to be prop­er­ly greased and its gears and joints need to be peri­od­i­cal­ly checked to ensure that noth­ing is wear­ing down the joints dur­ing pro­duc­tion. Any wear in these areas may also indi­cate stress on the robot from some­thing like lift­ing pay­loads that exceed their capacity.

Wires and cabling on robots also need to be checked on a reg­u­lar basis. Robots move at a rapid pace when per­form­ing their appli­ca­tions, which is why they are so attrac­tive to man­u­fac­tur­ers. How­ev­er, this lev­el of speed, along with long work­ing hours, may cause wear and tear to out­side wires or cabling. Make sure that wires are not sheer­ing or pulling away from the robot.
