4H RoboKids Amaze at Marion County Fair

The spec­ta­tors at this Mar­i­on Coun­ty Fair event did­n’t come to see cows or chick­ens. They came to see robots.

On Wednes­day, June 24^th, the Mar­i­on Coun­ty Fair host­ed the sec­ond 4H RoboKids maze com­pe­ti­tion. This year there were more con­tes­tants, a larg­er audi­ence, and a hard­er, agri­cul­tur­al­ly-themed robot maze.

RoboKids is a new 4H pro­gram designed to give kids in grades 3 – 5 a fun way to explore robot­ics, engi­neer­ing and sci­ence. At this par­tic­u­lar com­pe­ti­tion, each RoboKids team of two had a chance to nav­i­gate their Lego robot through the floor maze. The AgBot maze also includ­ed farm chores, requir­ing the robots to car­ry out spe­cif­ic tasks.

The Robots.com-sponsored Her­itage Ele­men­tary RoboKids Club made it to the com­pe­ti­tion in full force, arrayed in bright tie-dye T‑shirts. Their leader, Sue Itter­ly, is a fourth grade teacher at Her­itage. In April, sev­en teams from the Her­itage Ele­men­tary RoboKids Club dom­i­nat­ed at the Nation­al Robot­ics Chal­lenge, win­ning Gold, Sil­ver, and Bronze met­als.
