PPP Robots – Picking, Packing, and Palletizing

When a prod­uct is made in a fac­to­ry, it has to go through sev­er­al dif­fer­ent process­es before it is shipped out on a truck to the con­sumer. First, it has to be picked, then it has to be packed into a box, and then those box­es have to be pal­letized. All of these appli­ca­tions can be auto­mat­ed with robots, but usu­al­ly they have to be auto­mat­ed by dif­fer­ent robots at dif­fer­ent parts of the line. How­ev­er, some engi­neers are devel­op­ing robots called Pick/​Pack/​Pal (PPP) robots, which are able to per­form all three functions.

Many com­pa­nies invest in pick­ing, pack­ing, or pal­letiz­ing robots because they are able to per­form these func­tions more accu­rate­ly and effi­cient­ly than pre­vi­ous­ly used man­u­al oper­a­tions. How­ev­er, if com­pa­nies are able to invest in a robot that can per­form two, or even all three, of these func­tions, then they would be able to cut down on their equip­ment costs, sav­ing upwards of $50,000 to $100,000 by not hav­ing to buy anoth­er one or two robots, while also mak­ing the process more stream­line and efficient. 

Pick­ing up indi­vid­ual parts, pack­ing them into box­es, and pal­letiz­ing them onto skids is not an easy oper­a­tion, even for the smartest robots. This type of com­plex inte­gra­tion requires an inte­gra­tor who is capa­ble of inte­grat­ing com­plex pro­duc­tion lines that do not just involve robot­ics, but vision sys­tems, PLCs, hard automa­tion, grip­pers, end-of-arm tool­ing, con­vey­ors, and more to cre­ate a ful­ly auto­mat­ed work cell that would be capa­ble of run­ning at high speeds with­out a lot of issues along the way.
