The wide, sweeping work envelope of ABB's new IRB 5500 is further transforming painting applications. With the FlexPainter, projects that normally required four robots only take two. The need for fewer robots in the paint booth decreases the initial investment as well as the cost over time.
ABB IRB 5500 FlexPainter robots are capable of high acceleration rates of 24 m/s2 while altering direction. This results in a precise, top-quality coat. Their speed ranges from 1.5-2m/s. The ABB FlexBell Cartridge System (CBS) atomizer provides a steady stream with nearly zero paint loss during color change.
The FlexPainter robot has a horizontal reach of nearly six meters with an atomizer. The robot is wall-mounted which further increases reach capabilities and saves floor space. The especially large work envelope makes the IRB 5500 an ideal automotive painting robot. The long arms of two IRB 5500 robots move in parallel motions – simplifying exterior car painting by covering the entire vehicle without overlapping paint. This new method saves paint while increasing cycle speeds.
